A&P Mechanic Requirements

Enrolling in aviation maintenance training is an exciting step toward a rewarding career. At A&P Mechanic Institute (APMI), we've streamlined our enrollment requirements to focus on what matters most — your passion for aviation and mechanical aptitude.

This guide covers A&P mechanic school enrollment criteria and technical standards you'll need to meet to succeed. Stop wondering and start doing. APMI has removed the guesswork from launching your career as an Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) by outlining everything you need to know.

Aircraft Mechanic School Basic Enrollment Requirements

Becoming an A&P mechanic is very achievable if you like complex, hands-on work and are passionate about aircraft. To enroll at a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-certified Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS), there are some basic requirements you're expected to meet. APMI has four key prerequisites for its aviation maintenance training programs:

  • You must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

  • You must be able to write, read, speak and understand English.

  • You must be passionate about aviation and have mechanical aptitude.

While you can start training at age 17, you must be 18 years old when you take the practical and oral exams.

While APMI values passion and aptitude, we don't require prior mechanical experience to apply. You don't need a specific medical certificate, but you must be capable of our program's hands-on technical standards.

The APMI Advantage

APMI strives to cultivate future generations of AMT professionals through comprehensive training. We're an FAA-approved A&P school focused on helping students meet FAA A&P license requirements and thrive in the dynamic field of aviation maintenance. When you apply with us, we'll provide you with the confidence, skills and knowledge necessary to operate safely and demonstrate excellence:

  • Experienced instructors: We hire instructors with experience across various aviation disciplines and work environments. They will help guide you from the classroom to an exciting career in aviation maintenance.

  • An AI-resistant profession: Aircraft maintenance is a hands-on job that requires complex problem-solving and human accountability, making it difficult to fully automate. It’s also a career that continues to play an important role in aviation safety, as safe aircraft operation is always essential.

  • Flexible scheduling: Our programs offer flexibility for our students. We offer both day and night courses, allowing you to pursue an A&P mechanic career while working and meeting your commitments.

  • All-inclusive programs: Our cost-effective tuition bundle is a comprehensive package that covers essential tools and your FAA exam fees. Our curriculum focuses on theory and practical education, allowing you to apply your knowledge to real aircraft components so you can better understand the complex nature of aircraft engines, frames and electrical systems.

  • Manageable financing options: We offer flexible financing to accommodate prospective students from diverse backgrounds. We’ve partnered with trusted lenders and organizations, such as Sallie Mae and BreakTurn, to provide A&P school student loan and bridge program options. We also encourage students to explore scholarship opportunities through organizations like Women in Aviation International (WAI) and the Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance (AWAM).

  • 100% guaranteed job interviews: We have three partner flight schools that enable us to guarantee interviews for our graduates, giving them a head start in their job search.
